Exterior Photography
Before an exterior photography shoot CJB Photography always liaise with clients to ensure that we understand what images they are looking for and we examine any available architectural plans, maps etc, to ensure that the light will be at the best angle for the shot required.
Exterior Photography Case Study
Case Study
David Wilson Homes
We undertook a shoot for David Wilson Homes which involved photographing a variety of properties on two sites in Reading and Bracknell.
In a meeting with the client before the exterior photo shoot when we studied the site plans, it became apparent that we had to start our shoot at 6am and go backwards and forwards between the two sites during the course of the day to ensure the correct angle of the sun on each property. We took the final photograph at about 9pm after a very full day and many miles.
Different Exterior Photography Clients Have Different Priorities
Two different clients, requesting the same subject for photography, had totally different requirements. The first client required a deep blue sky, and was not concerned if the shadows on the building went to black, whereas the second client required detail throughout the building, and was quite happy for the sky to be less blue.
It is only by discussing the exterior photo brief with the client that we can be sure to give them what they want, and not what we think they want.
With CJB Photography's wide range of lenses, from ultra wide angle to telephoto, including two specialist perspective control lenses, we are able to offer the client a choice of viewpoints, whether this be from ground level or from a cherry picker or fork lift truck. On occasion we have requested permission to use the roofs of neighbouring property to ensure the best possible exterior photograph.
Using Wide Angle Lenses When Taking Exterior Photography
The use of our wide angle lenses enables us to produce dramatic, eye catching perspectives, either vertically or horizontally. The use of wide angle lenses usually enables us get the whole building in the photograph, depending on the space available at the site. Long, telephoto lenses are useful for picking out detail.
The incorporation of some foreground detail in architectural photographs, such as trees or plants in the case of houses, can enhance the final photograph. Uprights should always be either spot on or way off. Anything else looks like a mistake.
