Industrial and Commercial Photography
What is the difference between industrial and commercial photography?
We see it as follows:
- Industrial photography is generally undertaken on site on the factory floor.
- Commercial photography is usually photography undertaken in a studio or commercial environment.
Industrial and Process Photography
Chris Bridgewater of CJB Photography pays great attention to detail when producing industrial process photography, for example making sure the subject area is clean and tidy and that any workers who appear in the photograph are wearing protective clothing and using protective equipment.
When producing industrial process photography, the creative use of coloured lights can make an ordinary object or industrial process more attractive and bring out the shapes within the scene to better effect.
Commercial and Progress Photography
Commercial photography covers anything from studio environment shots, office furniture photographed in situ, through to commercial vehicles, images of a flaming grill taken for hotel brochures and progress photographs for building companies.
Creative use of lighting and viewpoint are essential and the key in the production of good commercial photograph.
Why use a professional photographer?
A professional photographer can produce far more eye catching industrial or commercial photographs than an amateur using a snap shot camera!
The photo on the left was taken by a managing director in the interests of economy. The new Marketing Manager realising this photograph looked cheap and might reflect badly on the image of the company.
He then asked us to undertake the shoot for him. The difference is obvious!
In both categories, lighting is the key to good photographs. Flash on camera is rarely the best light to use. Lighting sited away from the camera gives a much better effect and the number and power of those lights means we can light large areas or highlight an individual product.
Although most photographers will accept any given situation, and are prepared to compromise their quality accordingly, we always attempt to give the client the best possible result, by attention to detail, and by not necessarily accepting the situation as cast in stone.
For example by moving a cherry picker if it is not in the right position, by organising for flood lights to be left on a little longer, by altering established working practices (with full knowledge and approval of the management), in short, by thinking 'outside the box'.
