Industrial Photography

Chris Bridgewater of CJB Photography is a qualified Mechanical and Industrial Engineer.

His experience working in industry ensures that he knows his way around factories. When producing industrial photography he is comfortable talking to the Chief Executive one minute and getting the necessary co-operation from the workforce on the shop floor the next.

As a past Works Manager, he appreciates the pressures placed on production targets, and is very aware that whilst giving the industrial photography clients the quality and photographs they expect, any disruption must be kept to the absolute minimum.

As he worked in different environments during his years in industry, he is able to use his knowledge of many products and processes to great effect when producing factory and production line photographs. He is often aware of the methods employed in the factory and has ideas for industrial photography before even arriving on-site.

Chris Bridgewater has all his own safety equipment, shoes, hat, fluorescent jacket, and will also check that the operators in the industrial photographs he produces are complying with Health and Safety Regulations.

Planning Factory Floor Photography

He pays great attention to detail when producing imagery for industrial photography clients, for example removing that paper cup from the end of the fork lift truck axle, or the girlie calendar which really should not feature in the photograph!

The creative use of lighting, including some coloured lights when producing factory floor photographs, can make a mundane object or process almost attractive and show the shape of the subject to better effect.

Large areas can be lit to look natural, or a specific object can be lit to allow the background to go dark. This concentrates the eye on the important part of the industrial photograph and can lose factory clutter in the background.

Industrial Photography Case Studies

Case Study 1
Barr-Rosin

Industrial Photography Case Study 1

The accompanying industrial photograph shows the background going dark on a product for Barr-Rosin.

This drum is some 8 feet diameter and 50 feet long and to give the effect in the photograph, required the use of some six or seven lamps.

Case Study 2
Castlegate Marketing, Warstone and Turner

Industrial Photography Case Study 2

Attention to detail and meticulous planning is essential to ensure that a one-off chance of a photograph is accomplished. For example the pouring of molten metal is a process which may take place only every few hours, so it is vital to get the shot first time!

Castlegate Marketing particularly wanted the accompanying photograph as part of a series of industrial shots showing the whole production process from start to finish. With the operators' normal methods, this shot would have been impossible, but by careful planning with the operators, Chris Bridgewater of CJB Photography was able to modify their normal working practice to make the photograph possible.

Everything was set up in advance with two lights, a blue one from the rear right and a white one near to the camera, to capture this industrial photograph series. Had we missed the only opportunity, there would have been a four hour wait before the next pour, (and a very grumpy client)!

Case Study 3
Great Plains Alloys

Industrial Photography Case Study 3

Great Plains Alloys wanted to show their stocks of finished goods, within this industrial photograph series. This realistic looking photograph is the result of carefully placing five lights making the scene look bright and natural.

It was only the use of the extra lighting, which made the desired photographic effect possible.
